Class Description
Noriko’s movement vocabulary is rooted in dynamics changes, a clarity of energy, and a wide physical range, placing strong emphasis on a “speaking body.” She believes that movement is deeply connected to the mind, nurturing a stronger and more clearly defined sense of identity. This class is based on her movement vocabulary and approaches the body not as a collection of steps, but in its full complexity as a form of a living language. The class is structured through physical exercises and improvisation, culminating in set sequences in the final part of the class. Beginning with the awakening of the body through breath and sensory awareness, the work connects the inner sensation with the surrounding space. A strong focus is placed on floor work, emphasizing continuity, efficiency, and flow throughout the entire body. Attention is given to weight shifts, pathways of movement, and the connection between the center and the limbs. Through improvisation, dancers explore dynamics, timing, and individual expression, tuning into their own rhythm and physicality. By working with breath, momentum, and grounding, movement arises naturally from within, encouraging intuitive expression and clarity rather than imposed form. In the latter part of the class, dancers work with set sequences to develop musicality, focus, stamina, and the ability to respond immediately to the environment. Moving with clear intention and imagery, the aim is to transform movement beyond mere action, allowing the body itself to speak with presence and individuality.

Noriko Nishidate was born in Japan. She graduated with highest honors from the Japan Women’s College of Physical Education (JWCPE) in 2011 and subsequently entered the 4th year at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD). After SEAD, she worked with Jasmin Vardimon (UK), M&N Dance Company (Slovenia), En-Knap (Slovenia), and others. From the 2015/16 to the 2022/23 season, she became a company member at Theater Bielefeld. In the 2023/24 season, she joined the ensemble of Staatstheater Braunschweig under the direction of Gregor Zöllig. Throughout her career, she has worked with Ultima Vez, Sharon Fridman, Lali Ayguadé, Sita Ostheimer, Dunja Jocić, and others. Her choreographic work “HANAUTA” won first prize at OPUS 1 (Slovenia), and her solo “WARERU” received a Special Prize at SOLOCOREOGRAFICO (Italy) in 2014. In 2019, she was awarded “Die Dr. Otto Kasten Prize”, Germany’s most prestigious award for emerging artists, by the Deutscher Bühnenverein. In addition to her dance career, she works in photography and video and has held several exhibitions.
